Evaporative coolers differ from standard air conditioning units as they don’t require ventilation to work. They are therefore a great option for any offices, buildings, factories or warehouses which do not have open windows. They come in a variety of different sizes to suit different cooling duty requirements and workspace environments. Evaporative Coolers are especially popular in hot and dry climates such as certain places in the United States and Australia.
How They Work
Evaporative coolers work by using the process of evaporation to cool the air rather than a refrigeration process. They have a fan in the unit which pushes hot air across a cooling media; as this occurs evaporation begins, and this process starts a heat transfer which cools the air and moves it back into the environment.
Air Conditioning Units
Air conditioning units are generally the first choice for cooling in an office setting, and other working environments where ventilation is present. There are two main types of air conditioning units; exhaust tube air conditioning and split type air conditioning. Unlike evaporative coolers they do rely on the process of refrigeration.
How They Work
Exhaust tube units are considered to be very practical and cost effective, making them a common choice for most businesses. They work by pulling hot air in through grills on the exterior of the unit, this air is then moved through the unit and through a refrigeration cycle where heat transfer cools it and then it is pumped out of the front of the machine into the environment which needs cooling. Alternatively, there are split type air conditioning units, they work in a similar way but are made up of two components – one of which is placed inside and the other outside. This means inside there is little to no noise disruption from the unit. Split type units are generally more efficient but tend to be more expensive, they are more flexible as they tend to have longer connectors to their outside components.

How They Work
They comprise of the compressor, condenser, expansion valve and evaporator and are referred to as vapour compression refrigeration systems. The purpose of a chiller is to remove heat from somewhere it is not wanted, to do this it pulls in the heat using a refrigerant which then carries this heat to a condenser where it is sent into the atmosphere by means of an air, evaporation, or water cooled heat exchanger. After the refrigerant has left the condenser it is compressed which in turn lowers the temperature and then it is sent back to begin the process again.
