How to Renovate Your House: External Walls

This time of year is perfect for renovating your home. The warm weather makes the upcoming months the perfect time to remodel, repaint and even make major home renovations. Now that spring cleaning is out of the way, take on some renovation projects to update your home and even make it look like new this summer.

One of the biggest changes you can make to your home is updating the external walls. This is the first thing people see when they approach your home, so when your home’s exterior looks its best, your entire home will be transformed.

There are all kinds of ways to update the external walls of your home and the approach you choose will depend on the look you are going for and what your walls are made of. These ideas can help you get creative and find a way to renovate the outside of your home this year.

Before you get started, keep in mind that in some areas you will need a permit to make some kinds of renovations. Check with local authorities before you start any kind of project to make sure you are meeting laws and regulations.

Start with a Pressure Wash

The first step in any kind of external wall renovation is to give the stone or brick a deep cleaning. The easiest way to do this is to hire a pressure washer. A pressure washer uses water, and in some cases cleaning products, to wash dirt and grime away very easily.

Follow the directions that came with your pressure washer very carefully. Before you start, clear the area of anything that could be damaged by the water’s high pressure. When you work with a pressure washer, start at the top of the wall and work your way down.

When your walls are clean you can start renovating them. This first step is important because it makes it easier for you to do a project and will make the finished product look much better.

Repair Stone and Brick Damage

Once you’ve given the exterior a deep cleaning, repair broken stone or brick. Sometimes all it takes to update your home is to get it in top condition. Closely examine all the exterior walls and look for cracks, chips or loose or missing pieces. Wherever possible, repair loose pieces with some mortar before they go missing or cause more damage.

If your walls have major damage, you may want to consider replacing sections with something different, like a different style of stone or brick or even something like wood or siding. We’ll talk about this project more later in this article.

Make Small Improvements that make a Big Impact

Renovating your exterior walls doesn’t have to involve completely redoing them. In fact, making some small improvements can make a big impact on how your home looks from the outside. Adding features like shutters, flower boxes, new house numbers and other decorations is an easy way to update your exterior walls.

Think about the style you want your home to have and then look for accessories that make that vision come to life. These kinds of features add a lot of interest and character to your home, giving a plain wall personality. They also go a long way in adding depth to your house, adding some curb appeal so it looks unique and stands out.

The key to making exterior accessories work is to keep things in proportion and to remember that sometimes less is more. The last thing you want to do is add clutter and distract from your home’s style and features.

Redo Small Portions of Brick or Stone

Dress up a brick exterior by adding some variety. Choose some portions you want to replace with a different colour or style of brick and then carefully remove the bricks. You can use a hammer and mason’s chisel to carefully work the brick out.

Then, using masonry saw benches, bricks and mortar, you can add a pattern or just some sections of different kinds of bricks to the walls. This is a great way to draw attention to areas around windows, near the front door or anywhere else that could use some character. This tip also works for stone walls. You can remove some stone to replace it with a different type or even brick.

But, don’t stop with stone and brick. Portions of siding or wood can be a great accent for brick or stone walls. Remove the stone or brick and then install whatever kind of siding you want.

Add a Coat of Paint

Adding a coat of paint to your brick home is a very easy and affordable way to make it look completely different. If your brick is looking a little tired, worn or outdated, a beautiful shade of blue, green or grey can bring it back to life.

Use a high-quality paint that is designed to be used outside so it will stand up to the elements. It’s also vital that you use latex paint because brick needs exposure to oxygen so it will last longer.

Choose a colour that will look good in all lights and that makes your home stand out. Darker colours make a home look more refined while lighter colours can give it a modern edge. To make your job easier, use a paint sprayer to quickly add coats of paint evenly and smoothly.

One of the best ways to make a bold statement with your home is to renovate the exterior walls. You can update your stone or brick by making repairs and adding small accents or you can go all out and replace portions of it to add contrast and interest. If you want a bigger change, transform your walls with a coat of paint in a hue that adds personality and colour.

This summer is the perfect time to update your home. Start by updating its exterior to make it look like a whole new building. You’ll be surprised what a difference a few do-it-yourself projects can make!
