Plugging the Construction Industry Skills Gap: Is £10m Enough?

A 2018 survey carried out by CITB found that 73% of employers found filling vacancies difficult due to applicants lacking the skills required. The same survey also found that 64% of employers found not enough young people were being trained and therefore made it harder to fill vacancies. In a bid to try and improve the skill gap in the construction industry the government is backing a new campaign to get more people into construction with a target of another 11,800 entering the construction industry.

Pathways into Construction

The scheme titled ‘pathways into construction’ is going to invest £10 million into the construction industry to train new employees; spread across colleges, construction employers and federations, infrastructure projects and recruiters. It will also be used throughout councils and housing associations, the armed forces, charities, prisons and training providers. The aim of the scheme is to connect employers with those who may not always enter the construction industry. The scheme is looking to invest some of the £10 million into 270 colleges in England, Scotland and Wales in order to ensure young people are getting the information and training required to enter the construction industry. The CITB ‘Skills and Training in the Construction Industry 2018’ survey found that across the construction industry, the hardest roles to recruit for were carpenters and brick layers; jobs which the pathways into construction scheme aims to help fill.

Training in the Construction Industry

Training is essential in the construction industry; it has some of the biggest health and safety concerns as an industry. In addition to this, employers want to be able to ensure their project is being handled efficiently and completed to the highest quality; all of which are a result of proper training. The survey also found that 67% of employers have arranged or funded training for their employees and of these, 42% of them were towards a nationally recognised qualification. Although many construction managers are willing to train employees, it could be beneficial to them now that the government is supporting a national scheme to ensure the correct training is received.

The Future of the Construction Industry

Moving forward, it is expected that by 2023, 170,000 new jobs could be created, therefore it is ideal that this scheme will be bringing an estimated 11,800 new people into the construction industry.
